Raja is a Bengal tiger who is the mother of Gracie and Thor. She was previously housed in an enclosure that was entirely too small for her and was not given an adequate diet. Now, in her vast hillside enclosure she can be seen taking advantage of the various platforms given and napping in huge piles of straw or leaves. Only five of the original eight subspecies of tigers remain. Raja is thought to be a pure Bengal tiger and her markings are just stunning. She is in tip top shape and is very stealth like. Like a true mom, she seems to pop up when you least expect her to.
Although all the tigers are housed separately (except Gracie and Thor) she truly does take on the role of mother for our group in several different ways. Currently here at Crown Ridge Sanctuary, we have 4 outdoor enclosures but we need 5 in order to be able to give everyone their own yard. Raja shares her enclosure with another tiger on a rotational basis and really seems to enjoy the change of pace. She has also been spotted watching out for our young lioness, Alexis, and making sure she stays out of trouble. She does have a pool in her yard but you are lucky if you get to see her in it. She tends to take her dips when no one is looking. She can’t be seen having a bad hair day! Raja is very friendly toward all her visitors and has an extremely good disposition. She truly is the picture of grace.
