Mohan, a white tiger, is our oldest tiger here at the sanctuary and is the father of Gracie and Thor. White tigers are not albinos. They represent a recessive genetic mutation caused by inbreeding (a father breeding with his daughter, a mother with son, or sibling breeding). Only 1 in 10,000 births in the wild are white tigers. It is not easy for a white tiger to camouflage himself in the wild and they often fall victim to the law of “survival of the fittest.” The stripes on most white tigers are chocolate colored instead of black and they have piercing blue eyes and pink noses. White tigers can only exist in captivity by continual inbreeding. They are generally proliferated by private breeders who do so for economic rather than conservation reasons. Unfortunately, due to their mutation, these tigers have a variety of health issues like facial deformities, cleft palates, distorted spines, and crossed eyes, like Mohan’s.
Being the elder of the group, he enjoys soaking in the sun from his platforms and taking in the beautiful hillside scenery. In warmer months, you can most always spot him relaxing in his pool. When he lets out a huge roar he can be heard up to 5 miles away. He is generally very vocal and can be heard moaning, chuffing, and roaring throughout the day. At meal time, bones are always at the top of his list. He chooses his friends wisely and we are thankful to have such a charismatic man at Tiger Ridge.
