Gracie and her sister Thor share an enclosure here at the sanctuary and have a remarkable bond. Gracie is lucky enough to have her sister watch out for her since she is 90-95% blind. She was born with a condition where her eyelids were flipped inward and it was left unnoticed long enough for her eyelashes to destroy her corneas. Being malnourished also complicated her condition. Visitors can easily see Gracie’s opaque eyes but would rarely suspect she is blind based on her behavior.
You will find her running throughout her exhibit, seeking attention from all on-lookers. Gracie is the sweet heart of our group and always minds her manners as she always crosses her paws when resting. Like all sisters though, Thor and Gracie get along great most of the time but they disagree on a few things. In the summer Thor has been known to take advantage of Gracie’s condition. They will both get into one pool together and bat a ball back and forth, as if they were playing volleyball. Thor just can’t resist throwing in the occasional slam dunk, complete with huge splashes. Despite her disabilities though, Gracie has taken everything in stride and has adapted great to her new home.
