Alexis is different from all of our other animals in that she is an African Black Maned Lioness. Lions are the 2nd largest cats next to tigers and are native to Africa. Alexis is a young lion who is now full of energy. When she arrived here at Crown Ridge 3 years ago, she had been exposed to a very harsh life. She was separated from her parents when she was just a few months old and was being raised completely separate from all other big cats. She had never touched grass or sharpened her claws on a tree. After arriving here, we discovered she had a life threatening vitamin deficiency due to her previously poor diet. After proper treatment and care, she is back to being a spunky, healthy lion.
Due to her solid brown coat color, she is excellent at blending in with her surrounding environment. Alexis loves to hide underneath things and you may miss her if you walk by her enclosure too quickly but rest assure, she see’s you! A lion’s eyesight is 5x’s greater than a human’s and they can hear prey up to a mile away. In fact, she often likes to catch people by surprise and will run full speed toward you when you least expect it. Lions can sprint up to 35mph. She doesn’t let being the lone lion on the premise intimidate her. In fact, her roar is just as loud as Mohan’s and she’s not afraid to show you. She’s very vocal with visitors and seems to really enjoy life here on the Ridge. You will not find her lounging in the pool in her exhibit. Lions, unlike tigers, do not generally like water. Alexis is very protective of her space and especially her favorite enrichment item which is a medium sized orange boomer ball. She bats it throughout the exhibit and carries it everywhere with her!
